Main Application
As an intermediate
Acetonitrile is used for the synthesis of pharmaceutical products, for example, in the production of Vitamin B1 and sulfa pyrimidine. It is also used as a reacting intermediate for recrystallization and many other pharmaceutical sythesis. Acetonitrile can also be utilized as intermediate to produce pesticide.
As a solvent
Acetonitrile is widely applied as organic solvent. Industrially, it is used as a solvent in the purification of butadiene and in the manufacturing of photographic film. Further, Acetonitrile can also be used as the solvent in the process of producing synthetic fiber and special paints.
For extraction
In fat and oil processing, fatty acids can be extracted from animal and vegetable oil with acetonitrile. Furthermore, Acetonitrile is used for distillation purpose in petrochemical industry because of its selective characteristics to be miscible with organic compounds.
Others
Acetonitrile is also applied in the manufacturing of flame retardant agents, laboratory analysis, and coloring in textile.
